Basic disk, which usually found on computer operating system, are the most commonly used storage type. Another representative type—dynamic disk (alias software RAID), its application also becoming more and more extensive.

So, it is simple to find that dynamic disk offers greater flexibility for volume management as they use the databank to track information about dynamic volumes on the disk. It can hold more than 2000 volumes to manage the data much better. Each dynamic disk contains a duplicate of its database. Certainly, the most outstanding characteristic is that dynamic disk has the ability to create dynamic volumes-- span multiple disks (spanned and striped volumes) and fault tolerant volumes (mirrored and RAID-5 volumes). All these volumes on dynamic disk are known as the dynamic volumes.

Each dynamic volume has different definition and various functions; they will be clarified and particularized from the following text.

Simple volume
Simple volume has no notable advantages compare with other volumes. It just likes the primary partition and logic partition found on basic disk. If there is only one dynamic disk exist, we can create simple volume only.

Spanned volume
As the name suggested, spanned volume requires at least two disks, and it also can use up to 32 disks. When create spanned volume, one point should keep in mind: spanned volume can not provide the feature about fault tolerance. If one disk has the part of spanned volume fails, the total volumes fail and all the data on the spanned volume changes unavailable naturally.

Striped volume
Like spanned volume, striped volume also can be created on the condition that has two or more disks, and it also does not support fault tolerance. But, the striped volume can provide the improvement of disk input/output (I/O) performance because it can across the disk to distribute the I/O request.

Mirrored volume
Mirrored volume is one of the fault-tolerance dynamic volumes. It provides the data redundancy through the way to copy all the information on the volumes. It needs two disks to make up, if one disk fails, the data on this failed disk become unreadable, but another normal disk also can run normally.

RAID5 volume
Another fault-tolerance dynamic volume is RAID5. RAID5 and mirrored volume have similar functions. So, the performance of RAID5 is just like the mirrored volume.

Is the characteristic of dynamic volume fully precipitated by these kinds of volumes? The answer is definitely. Get much closer to these mufti-function volumes; make full use of its performance. Also reading on: How to create dynamic volumes with Windows Disk Manager or How to Setup Software RAID.
