How to Convert Dynamic Disk to Basic Disk in Windows 7 and Vice Versa without Losing Data?

As it is known to all, the users can at most create four primary partitions, or three primary partitions and one extended partition which can have unlimited logical partitions just the same as former Windows operating system, such as, Win 2000, 2003 and XP. What's more, in Win7, there are two types of disk configuration, basic disk and dynamic disk. There are some limitations about the disk configuration type when installing the Win7 operating system.

Dynamic Disk and Basic Disk

Basic Disk: It is a physical disk type in Windows 7 with several partitions, including primary partition and extended partition. All the operating system can visit the basic disks, but the Win2K, NT, Windows 9x, and DOS can not access dynamic disk. In Windows 2000, XP, 2003, you must restart the computer if you convert a basic disk to dynamic, but in Windows 7 restart is not required.

Dynamic Disk: it can include many dynamic volumes with the help of Windows built-in Disk Management, and also, there is no concept of primary or extended partition. No matter what file system it is, the Windows computers can visit the dynamic volumes straightway. However, the Windows 7 Home Edition does not work with Dynamic Disk.

Reasons: the advantages of Dynamic Disk

The Dynamic Disk can create a physical volume that combines small space on more than two disks, which can make the best of the space, and also it can create five types of volume: simple, simple, spanned, striped, mirrored, and RAID-5 volume. The mirrored and RAID-5 volumes are fault-tolerant, which means the ability to ensure that the data is still available, even if there is a failure in the hardware.

  • Right click "My Computer", select "Manage", and then select "Disk Management".
  • Right click the Disk that you want to convert, in the pop-up window, select "Convert to Dynamic" option.

Notes: if a Disk has been converted to dynamic, the operating system of Win7 and Vista Home Edition can not be installed in it.

If you convert a dynamic disk to basic with Win7 Disk Management, the backup of the data and files is recommended, because you can only reach your goal by deleting the dynamic volumes one by one.
