Need to create new partition in Windows Server 2008

Partitioning a hard disk is to divide the entire physical hard drive space into one or several drives. If you create a single partition with the entire disk space, everything including the Windows Server operating system, video, photo libraries, and other programs will be stored on the single partition.

When the Windows Server 2008 crashes or other programs go wrong, you might lose all data on that partition. So it is advisable to create a new partition for your system files, which can help protect system data from corruption since each partition has its own file system. Also, personal data can be safe when the OS collapses. In a nutshell, you might need to create a new partition in Server 2008, 2012, 2016, 2019 to organize different types of data and ensure the data security.

Create new volume in Server 2008 via built-in Disk Management

Windows Server 2008 has more functions in Disk Management than its previous system. It adds “Extend Volume” and “Shrink Volume” features to help change partition size and number in Server 2008. To create a new partition in Windows Server 2008, open Disk Management by pressing Win+R and run “diskmgmt.msc”, and follow the steps below:

Step 1. Find the unallocated space

To create a new volume with Server Disk Management, you must have an unallocated disk space. If you already have one partition created during Windows installation and named as C: drive, which has taken the entire disk capacity, you can use “Shrink Volume” first to make unallocated space, which is the source space we create a new partition.

Warning: it is highly recommended to make a backup before playing around with the Windows partition.

Step 2. Create the new partition

1. After locating the unallocated space to create the partition, right-click on it and select ”New Simple Volume”.

2. Click "Next" on the welcome page.

3. Fill in the Simple volume size field to the desired value in megabytes, then click ”Next”.

4. Choose Assign the following drive letter and select the desired drive letter from the dropdown menu. Click ”next” to continue.

5. On the Format Partition window, you can give a name for the new volume in the Volume label field. Click ”Next” to proceed.

Step 3. Confirm the result

Now you can review the summary and click ”Finish” to proceed. Then the new partition has been created successfully in Windows Server 2008.

Note:
Before creating new partition, you need to consider the partition style of the disk on which you need to create a new volume. Right-click on the disk and select “Properties”> "Volumes” to check the partition style in use between MBR and GPT. On MBR disk, only the maximum of 4 partitions can be created. If you want to create more than 4 partitions, you can convert one primary partition into an extended partition (which can contain unlimited logical drives ), or convert MBR to GPT.

Create new partition in Windows Server OS with partition management software

When you fail to create new partition in Windows Server Disk Management, you can run AOMEI Partition Assistant Server (Windows Server 2003, 2008 (R2), 2012 (R2), 2016, 2019 are supported) instead. This server partition manager can not only create a new partition on unallocated space, but also split a large partition into two smaller ones. You can download the demo version and give it a try.

Step 1. Install and run AOMEI Partition Assistant Server. Right click the partition (here we choose C drive) and choose “Split Partition”.

Step 2. On the new window, move the slide bar to create new partition.

Drag

Step 3. Back to the main interface, click “Apply” and “Proceed” to commit the pending operation.

Proceed

Other advantages over Server Disk Management

  • Automatically convert primary volume to basic logical volume: if you are creating the fifth partition in the disk, the AOMEI Partition Assistant Server will set the Flag into logic volume automatically. It will happen to the sixth and seventh partition too.

  • Merge partition: merge unallocated space into an existing partition, or merge two adjacent partitions into one to create a large size drive in the same disk.

  • Move Partition: move a partition to the place you want, quite useful when you want to extend a partition in Disk Management but the unallocated space is not adjacent.

Summary

To create new partition in Windows Server 2008, 2012, 2016, 2019 more easily and flexibly, AOMEI Partition Assistant Server is a better choice than Disk Management. Moreover, it comes with many other functions for disk management, such as cloning hard disk (HDD/SSD), moving Server OS to new hard drive, converting dynamic disk to basic one without deleting volumes, etc.
