Why extend C drive in Windows 7?

Windows 7 is still held by many users, though Microsoft released Windows 10. However, many new applications will occupy a lot of space. As time goes by, the C drive may run out of space, and it may cause the whole system to run slowly. Thus, you can move apps from the system C drive to another drive. Or you can extend C drive for Windows 7 would keep the system running normally.

Three ways to extend C drive in Windows 7

If you have decided to enlarge system partiton C in Windows 7, you can pick up one of the following three ways based on your own demand.

Way 1. Enlarge C drive in Windows 7 Disk Management.

Windows 7 has a snap-in tool called Disk Management a. It has a great powerful function Extend Volume. The Extend volume can help you extend C partition or other partitions. However, it can only extend partition which has an unallocated space adjacent to it. If there isn’t any unallocated space, the Extend Volume would be grayed out, and you can not use it.

Step 1. Press Windows + R combination to open Run dialogue.

Step 2. Input diskmgmt.msc and hit Enter to open Disk Management.

Step 3. Right-click Windows 7 C drive and choose "Extend Volume".

Step 4.   Click Next to continue.

Step 5. Then, click "Finish".

Way 2. Extend C drive in Windows 7 using CMD

You can also extend system partition 7 using CMD. Now, let's see how it works:

Step 1. Open Run dialogue, input "cmd" to open CMD.

Step 2. In CMD window, type diskpart and hit Enter to launch Diskpart window.

Step 3. Input commands as follows in order and hit Enter after you input each command.

▪ list disk ▪ select disk n ▪ list partition  ▪ select partition m ▪ extend size=x

PS.: m is the disk number that holds Windows 7 system partition; n is the partition number of C drive; x is the size in MB that you want to add to the partition

Way 3. Extend partition C in Windows 7 using a third-party software

What if the Extend Volume grayed out? You can resort to AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard. It allows you to extend C drive with non-contiguous unallocated space via "Merge Partitions" function.  If there is no unallocated space, you can turn to its Professional version to directly allocate free space from one hard drive that has enough space to C drive. Now, see how to extend C drive in Windows 7 via " Merge Partitions".
