Why need to clone only used space?

If you are going to upgrade your old disk, you may think of cloning the whole hard drive onto a new HDD or SSD. However, since there are both used and unused space on the drive, clone all data on it may be time consuming and waste space, because of the principle of clone - “the bigger the file is, the more space and time are needed”. Besides, once you want to clone to smaller drive, the way will make clone impossible. So we need a better clone solution to reduce the occupied space and time, and this is to clone only used space which won’t clone the unused space on drive so as to make a smaller file and reduce the space and time in a large extent. To do so, a third-party software, AOMEI Partition Assistant, is a must.

How to clone only used space with AOMEI Partition Assistant?

AOMEI Partition Assistant is a free and powerful software supporting clone disk only used space. Before it you may think of Windows’ built-in feature, but it simply can’t do this. Take windows7 as an example, though you can create a system image in Windows 7 with its Backup and Restore feature, you can’t do clone with it and never to say that clone larger drive to smaller drive. This situation is same to Windows 8 and Windows 10, since Windows 8\10 have the same backup and restore feature with Windows 7. Therefore, AOMEI Partition Assistant with clone only used space feature is needed, in addition, on this condition that you can clone to smaller drive.

Step 1: Download, install and launch AOMEI Partition Assistant. Right click the disk or partition you want to clone(here we choose disk1). Then select “copy disk”.

Copy Disk

Step 2:Choose “copy disk quickly” in the pop-up window, which will only copy the used space of the disk to another disk, then select “Next” to continue.

Select Disk Copy Method
Tip:“sector-by-sector copy” will clone all data on the disk no matter used or not, and this will take more time and space.

Step 3: In the next page, select a disk as destination disk (here we select disk 2). When you click “Next”, it will pop up a box that reminds you the data on the target disk will be deleted.( If there is something you want to keep, I recommend you use free AOMEI Backupper to backup first.)

Select Destination Disk

Step 4:Click "Yes" then it will turn to next page which you can edit disk in three different suggestions. Click "Next"

Edit Disk

Step 5:In next page, you could read the note about "how to boot OS from destination disk" and then click "Finish".

Finally, don’t forget to click "Apply" on the toolbar to implement our operation on the physical disk. As you see, AOMEI Partition Assistant is a convenient clone software, also it’s good at solving partition problems, such as, clone only resize C drive , merge two primary partitionsand so on.
