Why transfer programs to external hard drive?

Sometimes, users may need to use the same program on different computers. If you choose to download again every time, it may cost you a lot of time. In this case, an external hard drive comes in handy. You can transfer frequently used programs to the external hard drive. In this way, you only need to connect the external hard drive to a different computer, and you can run the program directly, which is very convenient.

How to move installed programs to external hard drive in Windows 10?

To transfer the installed programs to an external hard drive quickly and easily, you need to ask for the help of a third-party disk partition management tool. Fortunately, there are a number of excellent third-party software on the market for you to choose from. Here, I sincerely recommend AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional to you. Not only have I personally used it, but I have also been shocked by its powerful features.

It supports Windows 10/8/7/Vista/XP, and its App Mover function can transfer the installed program to an external hard drive and run it directly without re-downloading. It can even restore the moved applications to the original location. Most importantly, its operation interface is simple and easy to understand. Regardless of whether you have a certain degree of computer literacy, you can use it alone to manage disks flexibly.

Having said so much, now I will show you how to transfer programs to an external hard drive. After reading the detailed steps I gave, please download the demo for trial.

How to transfer all files to external hard drive Windows 10?

Note:
The above is the whole process of how to transfer programs to external hard drive. By using AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional, it is not difficult to transfer the program. But some people may ask, “If I not only want to transfer the installed programs, but also all the data including system files, etc., can App Mover still be implemented?”. App Mover can only transfer programs from one drive to another. If you want to transfer all files on your computer, I recommend you to use the Disk Clone function.

Disk Clone can clone all files on the disk to the external hard drive. When you use the external hard drive next time, all files can also be run directly. It provides two cloning methods: Clone Disk Quickly and Sector-by-Sector Clone. The former refers to cloning only the used part, allowing the target disk smaller than the total size of the source disk; The latter refers to cloning the entire hard disk, so the external hard drive must be equal to or larger than the source disk.

PS.: If you want to transfer the operating system to an external hard drive, you can also try Migrate OS to SSD.

Step 1. In the main interface of AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional. Click “All Tools” and then “Disk Clone Wizard” on the left side.

Step 2. Select a copying method as you need from “Clone Disk Quickly” and “Sector-by-Sector Clone”. Here, we select “Clone Disk Quickly” as an example.

Step 3. Select the disk you want to clone as the source disk and hit on “Next”.

Step 4. Then select the external hard drive as the destination disk and click “Next”. If the external hard drive is SSD disk, you can tick Optimize the performance of SSD to improve the speed of write and read.

Step 5. In this window, this program allows you to adjust the partition size on the destination disk.

Resizing

Tip: There are three options for you: “Clone without resizing partition”, “Fit partition to entire disk” and “Edit partition on this disk”. After finishing the adjustment, please click “Next”. When you're cloning to smaller SSD, the first option is grayed out.

Step 6. You can preview the disk cloning operating by viewing the “Pending Operations”. To commit the “Pending Operations”, please click “Apply” and “Proceed”.

Sum up

Just like App Mover, AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional has other more useful functions. If your disk is almost full, you can use Allocate Free Space to extend the size of the partition; if you need to clear all data on the external hard drive, you can also use Wipe Hard Drive. You can even use Partition Recovery Wizard to retrieve lost partitions on external hard drives.
