Question: Can I clone to smaller SSD?

“Hi, guys! Recently, I have bought a Samsung 500 GB SSD. In order to shorten boot time and response time, I try to replace my old 1TB HDD. In the meantime, I don’t want to reinstall Windows 7 operating system and all programs on SSD. Therefore, I want to clone 1TB HDD to 500GB SSD. I know that it is available to clone hard drive to another hard drive with an equal size or larger capacity, but is it possible to clone large HDD to smaller SSD with secure boot?”

Answer: It is possible to clone 1TB HDD to 500GB SSD

As mentioned above, it is able to clone hard drive to larger one, but can you copy a larger disk to a smaller one, like copying 1TB HDD to 500GB SSD, to 256GB SSD even to 128GB SSD? In fact, the answerer is positive, as long as the used space on the source HDD is not larger than the capacity of the destination SSD. At this point, what you need is proper HDD to SSD cloning software.

Here AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard is recommended, which can work well with Windows 10/8.1/8/7, XP, and Vista. Its Clone Disk Quickly option allows you to clone only used sectors on the source disk; what’s more, it allows you to align SSD partitions to improve SSD performance during the copying process.

◆Fit partitions to enter disk will modify partitions on SSD automatically
◆Edit partitions on this disk permits you to adjust a partition manually as you need.

Step 6. You’ll return to the main interface, confirm the operation and click “Apply” > “Proceed” to implement it.

◆When you can’tboot from cloned SSD, disconnect the original HDD or change the connection socket of the source HDD and destination SSD.
◆Don’t format or wipe HDD before ensuring that you can boot the computer successfully from SSD.
◆For system disk copy, AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard supports only MBR to MBR disk; if you want to clone MBR system disk to GPT or GPT system disk to MBR/GPT, please upgrade to Professional version.
