Why need the partition magic for Server?

It is well known that the Disk Management in Windows Server 2000, 2003 does not have the features of "Extend Volume" and “Shrink Volume”. The significant advantages make it quite challenging for Windows Server users to increase or decrease partition size based on their personal requirements. Especially the Server system is almost full and needs to be extended in time, otherwise, the OS will run slower and slower.

The good news is that the “Extend Volume” and “Shrink Volume” features are added to Disk Management in the subsequent Server operating systems, like Server 2008, 2008 R2, 2012, etc. However, the “Extend Volume” is clickable only when there is unallocated space right adjacent to the aim partition, or you will find the extend volume greyed out in Server Disk Management. As a workaround, you can delete the partition, which is located right behind the to-be-extended partition, to get an adjacent unallocated space, and then extend the partition successfully. Of course, doing that will erase all data on the deleted volume, so a backup is necessary.

Extend Volume Greyed Out Server 2012

To get around such hassles and extend partition more easily, you can turn to the third-party partition manager like Partition Magic. However, this tool cannot run on Windows Vista and later versions, and Server editions of Windows NT, 2000, 2003, etc. Moreover, the Symantec website states, “Sorry, we no longer offer Norton Partition Magic” on October 13, 2011. Therefore, today we would like to introduce another partition magic manager for Windows Server users.
